This second volume completes the first section of the Compendia series.
The first volume, published in 1974, mainly dealt with the political and legal aspects of Jewish society in the first century. This second volume describes its social and economic structure and its religious and cultural life and institutions. As in the first volume, much attention has again been paid to Jewish life in the Diaspora, because of its importance for Jewish history in the first century, especially in relationship with the history of Early Christianity. The influences from the Roman Hellenistic milieu upon Jewish life have been indicated in the appropriate chapters, but special chapters are provided on paganism in Palestine and on the attitude of Greeks and Romans towards Judaism, as reflected in their literature.
